My one-liner is kind of a play on The Catcher in the Rye title and the scene is from the chapter at the end of the book when Holden Caulfield is at the N.Y. As the leading actor was helping his leading lady onto my carousel horse, I was supposed to take my hand off the break handle, then step out of the pit up onto the carousel deck and say, ‘Be sure to catch her if she falls’. “On the day of the shoot, the only one line I had to say and the only thing I had to do sounds so simple. It brought authenticity to the movie scene but then we had to change it right back again. “That braking system would never pass OSHA today. Some mirrors and paint was also brought to life and the original long handled braking mechanism that I happened to still have hanging around my warehouse was temporarily put back into place. “So, we removed modern flooring and replaced it with wooden planks like it had back in the day. While the Marenna carousel dates back to the correct time period for the movie, modifications had been done over the years. I guess I was that much of a character to him!’” says George. I want your carousel and I want you in the movie operating it. The director said, ‘No, you don’t understand. Frankly, I thought he was a little crazy if he thought I’d let anyone else set up my equipment. I thought he meant he wanted me to set up the carousel. “Then the director said, ‘And I want you along with it’. It was everything they wanted”, says George. It’s perfect!’ The director told me later that they scoured the countryside, had looked at 80 other carousels and then immediately fell in love with mine. “They took one look at the one I bring to the Madison Rotary carnival and said, ‘This is the one. Marenna who also has a one-liner as a movie extra, says he received a call from the director about two years ago asking if he could take a look at his carousels in his Orange warehouse. “So, that’s one reason this movie is about Salinger and not a screenplay about his book,” explains George Marenna, Jr., owner of Marenna carnival and the carousel. Salinger, however, refused to allow any film adaptations of book. Since then it has been translated into every major language in the world and sells around 1 million copies annually. Overall, it was a quick read and the voice is very strong and funny.Featuring a carousel horse on the cover, The Catcher in the Rye was a controversial novel when it was first published in 1951. There are some truly interesting and inspiring parts of this book however, I particularly love the Amsterdam chapter with a really heartfelt look into Van Gogh. I was expecting a more substantial connection to the films and life but most of the time it was more of a quick reference or title of a movie that I, not seeing too many movies listed, though there are many I plan to see someday, I had difficulty placing or picturing in order to connect to the bigger picture. It was also difficult to keep up with the never ending references and name drops in the book. However, the voice of the writing does at times maybe capture the bravado and childishness of being a twenty year old struggling artist too well and can be off putting to read. Currently being a 20 something figuring out my own artistic voice and what to do with it, it was reassuring in some ways to find that connection to a person whose career has been popular and filled with interesting projects. There are so many points when reading this that I completely feel connected to and understand the thoughts and feelings of Patton’s 20 year old self. I think maybe if Patton and I were the same age I would have loved this book. I have always liked Patton Oswalt and I love movies, so it seemed to be a good fit. The premise of this book was so intriguing and seemed to hit so many of my interests that I had to read it.
